About Tucson

Tucson is a city in and the county seat of Pima County. It is the home of the University of Arizona, and residents take pride in the Wildcats. The citywide population is 542,629 in the 2020 United States census, and the metropolitan area population is 1,043,433.

 

The metropolitan area forms part of the larger Tucson-Nogales combined area. Both Tucson and Phoenix anchor what is called the Arizona Sun Corridor. The city is 108 miles (174 km) southeast of Phoenix and 60 mi (97 km) north of the United States–Mexico border. Tucson is the 34th-largest city and the 53rd-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Suburbs include Oro Valley and Marana northwest of the city, Sahuarita south of the city, and South Tucson in a separate area south of downtown.

 

Communities adjacent to or near the city include Casas Adobes, Catalina Foothills, Flowing Wells, Midvale Park, Tanque Verde, Tortolita, and Vail.

 

Towns outside the metropolitan area include Benson to the southeast, Catalina and Oracle to the north, and Green Valley to the south.

 

Sierra Vista features a KWSA Business Center. Sierra Vista has been one of the fastest-growing communities in Arizona and is a major population center for southeastern Arizona.

The Climate in Tucson

The climate is typical for southern Arizona. The city has a hot desert climate with two major seasons consisting of a hot summer and a generally mild winter. Tucson averages 10.61 inches (269.5 mm) of precipitation per year, concentrated during winter storms and the monsoon season of summer.

 

The city is slightly cooler and wetter than Phoenix due to its higher elevation and surrounding mountains. The average daily high temperature in summer is between 98 and 102 °F (37 and 39 °C) and low temperatures range between 71 and 77 °F (22 and 25 °C). The weather in the fall is much like spring, dry, with warm and cool nights and warm and hot days.
